HOW TO BUY RIBBONS

At M&J Trimming, ribbons are one of our specialties. We offer hundreds of different types, colors, and sizes. If you’re looking for the perfect ribbon for your projects, read through our guide to learn more about the different options we offer!

RIBBON TYPES

The first step to buying a ribbon is picking out what type you would like. Different types of ribbon are better suited for different projects.  Below is an overview of some of our selection.

Grosgrain – This style of ribbon is a classic. The ribbons have a ridged texture, which helps bows and knots from unraveling. For this reason, grosgrain ribbons are often used for hair bows. They are also great for scrapbooking.

Hand Dyed – Hand dyed ribbon often has a gradient pattern featuring three or four different colors. Because of the nature of the dyeing process, each yard is unique!

JacquardsJacquards are beautiful embroidered ribbons that are usually used for home décor and garments. M&J Trimming offers a variety of different jacquard styles, but the most popular patterns are floral and Greek Key.

Organza Organza ribbons are sheer and have a very thin woven texture. They are light and airy, making them great for creating voluminous bows on presents. They are also a popular choice for eveningwear.

Ruffled – This style of ribbon comes in many materials. Its trademark characteristic is its pleated appearance. Ruffled ribbons are great for adding to home décor pieces like pillows, and they also look fantastic on girls’ dresses.

Satin – This is one of the most popular types of ribbon. Satin ribbon comes in dozens of colors, making it a great choice for weddings and parties. Satin ribbon is soft and very shiny.

Silk Silk ribbon is always an elegant choice. It is very soft and light, making it a perfect choice for eveningwear and bridal.

Velvet Velvet ribbon is very plush and luxurious. It is popular around the holiday season, and used for gift wrapping and clothing embellishments. Adding velvet to your outfit or craft instantly makes it feel cozier and warmer.

RIBBON FACES

The “face” of a ribbon refers to the side of the ribbon that is supposed to be shown off.  There are two types of ribbon faces: single face and double face.

Single face ribbon has one side that is meant to be shown off. A good example of this is a velvet ribbon. One side has the soft velvet pile, and the other side has a smooth, flat surface. Single face is usually less expensive, so if only one side of your project is visible, choose the single face option.

Double face ribbon has two sides that can be shown. This is most common with silk and satin ribbons. If both sides need to be identical, use double face ribbon. It is usually more expensive and more slippery if it is made of satin or silk.

RIBBON SIZES

Ribbons come in a number of sizes from 3/8 inch to 3 inches! Different sizes are more suitable for different types of garments and projects.

Smaller ribbons like the 3/8 inch to 3/4 inch are great for using as lacing. Corset back wedding dresses can be easily updated with new ribbon that matches wedding colors. Smaller ribbon is also great for adding an accent to party invitations, and adding discreet handles to a bag. It also happens to be the most popular size range for using in jewelry.

Medium width ribbons, from 3/4 inch to 1 1/2 inch are great for using as hair ribbons. They are also used often times for standard gift wrapping.

Larger ribbons are better suited for fashion. 1 1/2 inch to 3 inch ribbons are great for belts and home décor. Three inch satin ribbon is a popular option for bridal belts, and sashes.
