Add a Little Shine to Your Winter Cover

By Roseann

With winter in full swing we are all bundled up.  I happen to be a big fan of the layered look, but sometimes our layers need a bit of pizzazz.   Fortunately M&J offers enough bling at the right cost, so you can bedazzle any of your outerwear.  Some ideas may include adding Swarovski rhinestones to fingerless gloves a knit cap or a scarf.  Take advantage of Old Man Winter’s hostility and wear some fun accessories.

M&J Trimming offers two types of Swarovski rhinestones, hot fix and flat back

Hot fix rhinestones are applied to garments using heat, the adhesive is already fixed to the back of the stone.  To apply hot fix rhinestones you may use an iron or the preferred method by using a rhinestone hot-fix setter.  To learn more about using hot-fix setters please watch our video.

Flat back rhinestones are applied to garments using glue.  There are two types of glue we recommend for this type of application.  Depending on what type of project you are working on we recommend either E 6000 craft adhesive or Gem Tac permanent adhesive.  E 6000 is an industrial strength adhesive and works great on projects that require a stronger bond, such as outdoor plant potters.  E 6000 is also gentle enough to be used on clothing and is washer and dryers safe, however the curing time takes about 24 to 72 hours.  Gem Tac is also a permanent adhesive that is safe for clothing, washer and dryer safe, and dries clear in about 10-20 minutes.

History of Rhinestones

By Milton

After working with Fashion Analysis and Trend Forecasting, one thing I have learned is that trends repeat itself over the years.  There are some things that no matter the season or what the hottest trend is, they are always popular. For instance, there is denim, we can wear jeans all year long and even if the cut or color changes, they are always in fashion.

Rhinestones are one more trend that has been popular for decades. They were used to embellish Elvis Presley costumes, and after speaking with Autricia, who has been working with M&J for over 30 years, she told me how they applied rhinestones to Elvis’ costumes using something very similar to our EZ Rhinestone Setter.  They were used to embellish shoes for many years. Examples of this are: the David Evins sandals from 1934, which were originally designed for the movie Cleopatra but later modified for everyday wear, and the Roger Viver Decollete sandals that were very popular in the 50’s.

In 1892, Daniel Swarovski patented an electric cutting machine that facilitated the production of lead crystal glass jewelry. And in 1895 the Swarovski Company was founded. Nowadays, they are the biggest creators and distributors of crystals for fashion houses, designers and consumers.

Now, in 2009, we can see them everywhere: cell phones, shoes, headphones, clothing, eveningwear, and so on. The best part is that we don’t have to spend crazy amounts of money buying clothing and accessories with rhinestones, since now they are so accessible and easy to apply.

How To Apply Hot-fix Rhinestones Using The Hot-Fixer Setter

There are a couple of ways to apply Swarovski rhinestones onto garments, accessories and projects.  One of the most simpliest way is by using the Hot-Fixer Setter.  The setter comes in very handy when you choose to use Swarovski hot-fix rhinestones, which already has adhesive on the back.  The setter comes with 7 interchangeable application tips.  Each tip is used with different sizes of rhinestones.

To demonstrate how to use the Hot-Fixer Setter, we’ve put together a video.  It will show you just how easy it is to use.  This is one of the best tool to use especially when you want to make sure the rhinestones don’t come off.
