Stripes & Sequins Blogger of the Month – December!

Hi Everyone!  I’m Grace Atwood, from Stripes & Sequins.  I’m so honored to be December’s Blogger of the Month.  I’ve been obsessed with M&J Trim from the moment I moved to New York City. It really is a candy store for the crafty… more ribbon, gems, cord, and treats than one could imagine.  I could (and have!) spend hours just ogling the goods – and getting inspiration for my next DIY project.

I’ve put together four easy projects using the products that M&J sent me…  I hope that you enjoy – and attempt to recreate them yourself!

M&J sent me a beautiful box of goodies… pictured above.  Inside was sewing thread, striped ribbon, studded trim, black satin ribbon, black faceted chain, and the coolest hear metal sequins.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Project #1:  Tory Burch Inspired Collar
When I saw Tory Burch’s Skyline Collar Necklace, I knew it was something I could relatively easily recreate at home.  The 1.25″ Square Jewel Trim  (Item# 45090) that M&J sent me was perfect.
I also used the 24mm Double Faced Satin Ribbon Item# 02324 , a scrap of suede, and my glue gun.
I snipped off the mesh edges of the trim and cut the trim into four pieces (2 short, 2 long.)  I then just glued them to the suede in the shape I liked, and cut it out.    I finished the necklace by sealing the edges of it with Fray Check, and gluing on two long pieces of the black satin ribbon.
And you’re done!
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Project #2:  Striped Button Ascot

I love stripes, and I love the idea of wearing a fun striped pin with a striped t-shirt.  I made this one and have been wearing it constantly.  Pinned to a comfy sweater, my favorite trench, etc… it adds a more creative and fun element to my more classic pieces.

  1. Take a piece of 1 1/2″ Mono Striped Ribbon Item# 39516 (about 8”) and form a loop.  Close with glue.
  2. Form another loop with a smaller piece of ribbon, and attach perpendicularly to first loop.
  3. Add two pieces of striped ribbon to the bottom.
  4. Glue on two pieces of black satin ribbon.
  5. Add a botton, and then another sparkly button.
  6. Flip over, and add a pin to the back.  Reinforce with a bit more glue and a small piece of ribbon.

Yup, I’m a little bit obsessed with this one.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Project #3:  Safety Pin and Chain Necklace
This was a fun and easy one.  There’s really no rhyme or reason to this project… just have fun with it!
Using the chain M&J sent me 9mm Black Metal Chain Item# 36959 (and I can’t say enough good things about this chain – it’s metalized plastic with the coolest little mirrored facets that give it the coolest sparkly touch) I attached three similar length pieces to a jump ring and then to a clasp.  From there, I just pinned and pinned, until I had a messy – yet sophisticated necklace.  I love that it’s a bit rock & roll… I will wear it with my preppier pieces (striped tees, shift dresses, etc.)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Project #4:  Embellished Silk Shell

This was another simple one…  I had a silk shell in my closet that I was going to get rid of, but I decided to liven it up a bit with the 10mm Heart Metal Sequin Item# 39960 that M&J sent me.

All it took was a little patience and my glue gun… such an easy way to spruce up a boring basic!

~~~~~~~~~
Thanks again to M&J Trim for having me… I had such fun with this project!  For more Stripes & Sequins, be sure to check out my blog, follow me on Twitter, like S&S on Facebook, or follow my pinboards!
Blogger of the Month, December!
By Blerona
Our New Favorite blogger for December is Grace from Stripes & Sequins!
Hi everyone!  I’m Grace from Stripes & Sequins.  Ever since moving to New York City six years ago, M&J Trimming has been one of my favorite places in the city… a virtual candy store for us crafty folks!  I’m honored to be M&J’s blogger of the month.  If I had to describe my style in two words, it would be human magpie.  I love all things shiny and sparkly..  By day, I work for BaubleBar, where I run their social media.  I’ve been blogging for about two years and love DIY – it forces me to be creative and helps me temper my expensive taste.  My blog has been featured on Guest of a Guest, the Wall Street Journal, and Dismount Creative as a Top DIY blog.  I’ve also DIY’d with The Glitter Guide, which is, very fittingly, one of my favorite online publications!
Chic Steals Blogger of the Month-October!
Hi everyone! I’m Carly from Chic Steals, and I’ve been a huge fan of M&J Trimming for such a long time.  I make it a point to always stop in the store and meander through whenever I’m in New York City.  It’s like a glittering treasure trove for me, stocked full of beads, baubles, trims, rhinestones, and appliqués – so much so that I’m never able to leave with empty hands.  It’s amazing how easily you can update a piece of clothing or an accessory with said beads, baubles, and appliqués…and how incredibly high-fashion projects can look when you’ve added a bit of frivolous sparkle to them.
Project 1:
Sequin Nails
I love a metallic manicure as much as the next girl, but most polishes aren’t bright enough to truly gleam like the real thing.  Though a little tedious, a sequin manicure gets those fingertips a-sparkle: a true conversation piece!
*6mm Flat Loose Sequins Style# 34424 in Turquoise
 *scissors
*toothpick
*thick clear base coat nail polish (the stickier the better!)
*thick clear sealing topcoat nail polish
How To:
1. Cut a bunch of sequins in half, and some into quarters.
2. Work on each nail one-by-one.  Spread a thick coating of base coat onto a nail.  While it is still wet, use the flat end of the toothpick to pick up a half-sequin, and place at the tip of your nail in the center.  (It’s easier to pick up the sequin if you lick the end of the toothpick.)
3. Fill in the sides of each nail with the quarter-sequins.
4. Continue to fill in the nail with more half- and quarter-sequins, layering each one overlapping the previous one a little, covering the center of your nail going back to the cuticle.
5. Cover with at least one coating of topcoat; thick enough so that the edges of the sequins don’t lift up or feel too scratchy.
Flash those holographic talons!  My manicure lasted about 5 days before the edges of the sequins lifted up too much, so something like this would be perfect for a party or a special occasion.
Project 2:
Ribbon-Wrapped Bangle
It’s so simple to update an old bangle with wrappings of brightly-colored ribbon and thread!  You can even use scraps of fabric to keep things fun and festive.
*38mm Silky Grosgrain Ribbon in Sapphire and Grey Style# 42053 (1-800-9MJTRIM)
*Thread Style# 42681 in Flint and Mink Blue
*M&J Trimming ribbon
*contrasting color of fabric paint
*bangle
*glue for fabric, metal, and plastic
*scissors
How To:
1. Use fabric paint to paint designs on your ribbon; I chose lines and dots.  Allow to dry.
2. Place a small amount of glue on the end of a ribbon, and glue it to the inside of the bangle.  Wrap the ribbon around the bangle a couple times, then cut and glue the free end to the bangle inside.
3. Add the other color of ribbon, and the painted ribbon as well, overlapping the ribbons on the bangle as you go.
4. For visual interest, add an area of thread wrapped around the bangle as well.
5. After all ends are glued down and the bangle is covered completely, add a contrasting ribbon tied around the bangle for a little sass.
Wear stacked with other bangles or on its own as a cute accessory to brighten your day.
Project 3:
Bead-Edged Cut-Out Top
Give them all the cold shoulder with this skin-baring top.  Take it to the next level with a border of bright metallic beads around saucy cut-outs.
*8mm 60″  8MM 60″  Faux Pearl PKG Style# 49380 in Silver (1-800-9-MJTRIM)
*long-sleeved knit top
*Thread Style# 42681 in Flint
*marking chalk
*scissors
*fabric glue
*clear bead cord (I’m using Magic Stretch)
How To:
1. Try on the top and mark where you want to cut out the shoulder (remember to mark an oval a little smaller than you want for your finished piece).
2. Cut out where you marked with scissors.  Try the top on again to make sure it’s the shape you want, and make adjustments if necessary.
3. Turn the top inside-out and carefully notch around the cut edge so the fabric won’t pull too much when you turn it inwards.  Spread a small amount of fabric glue around the edge of your cut-out.  Fold the fabric inwards to create a finished edge.
4. Make a double knot in your beading cord and thread your beads onto it, until you have enough to go all the way around the cut-out.  Knot the end loosely so you can add more beads later on if you find you haven’t strung on enough.
5. Use a doubled length of matching thread to stitch your string of beads around the cut out.  Stitching over the cord in-between each bead I found is
enough to secure the string onto the top.
6. If you get to the end of the string and find you still haven’t gotten all the way around the cut-out, un-knot the cord and add more beads on. Finish the cord with a double-knot and trim the cord close.
Wear with something a bit more covered-up on the bottom to play off the sultriness of the cut-outs on top.
Project 4:
Bead-and-Ribbon Fishnet Necklace
*8mm 60″  8MM 60″  Faux Pearl PKG Style# 49380 in Silver (1-800-9-MJTRIM)
*Thread Style# 42681 in Flint
*38mm Silky Grosgrain Ribbon in Sapphire Style# 42053 (1-800-9MJTRIM)
*metallic beads
6mm Flat Loose Sequins Style# 34424 in Turquoise
*6mm Mesh Tube Ribbon Style# 36876 in Grey  (1-800-9-MJTRIM)
*large crystal pendant
*assorted jumprings, rings, and chains
*necklace closure
*eyepins
*pliers (I used round-nose, flat-nose, and wire-cutting)
*optional: lighter or open flame
How To:
1. Tie the end of the ribbon to a ring.
2. Make the closure of the necklace and add a jumpring with chain attached to it to one side.  Add a jumpring to the other side and attach it to the ring from the previous step.
3. Make the pearl bead string by dropping beads into the mesh cord, and knotting the cord on either side of each bead.
4. Attach the pearl bead string to the ring with the ribbon by simply double-knotting the metallic mesh cord around the ring, and trimming the excess.
5. Make the metallic bead string by threading a sequin onto an eyepin, then a bead, then another sequin, and finishing the eyepin in another loop, trimming the excess.  Attach each beaded segment to each other to create the bead string.
6. Try on the necklace and decide how long you want it.  Cut the attached chain accordingly, and attach the beaded string to the end of the chain with a jumpring.
7. Attach another large ring to the end of the beaded string – this will lie in the center, and hold the pendant.
8. Tie the free end of the ribbon to the ring, and trim the excess.  If the ends of the ribbon are fraying too much, you can heat-seal them with an open flame.
9.  Attach a smaller chain to the end of the pearl bead string, trim the excess, and attach it to the center ring as well.
10. Slip the pendant inside the mesh cord.  Twist the ends tightly around the pendant, roll to the back, and trim.
11.  Attach the pendant to the center ring with jumprings.
Wear a regal piece like this with simple, understated clothing so it stands out all on its own.
Tip: Choose black or orange beads for a spooky Halloween-style spiderwebby piece!
Project 5:
Sparkly Beaded Hairclip
*4″ x 2 1/4″ Rhinestone Applique Style# 47335 in Black ( 1-800-9MJTRIM)
*stiff black felt
*hair barrette
*scissors
*hot glue & glue gun
*hand-sewing needle and matching thread
How To:
1. Remove the center spring from the barrette and spread hot glue on the top.  Press on to the felt and allow to dry.
2. Use the needle and thread to stitch around the barrette to secure it to the felt further.
3. Hot-glue the appliqué to the other side of the felt, directly on top of the barrette.
4. Once dry, trim around the felt with scissors.  You can even take a small pair of scissors and cut out all the intricate spaces in the appliqué for more visual interest.
This piece looks lovely securing a ponytail, or glittering out from the back of a braided chignon.  The ways to use a beaded appliqué are numerous: you can add it onto a ribbon belt, a boring cloche, an old clutch, use as a shoe-clip, attach to a ribbon and wear as a wristlet, or even attach a chain to either side and sport it as a pretty pendant necklace.  Wear it with flair!
Runway DIY Blogger of the Month- September!
M&J has always been my go-to source for supplies and inspiration, so being asked to be September’s Blogger of the Month was so flattering and exciting! When I was very young, my great-aunt gave me a beautiful box full of gorgeous silk ribbons for my birthday. I was only about 6 at the time, but I still remember it as one of my favorite presents. When I opened M&J’s box and saw the stunning ribbons they had picked out for me, I felt like a little kid again! There are so many ways to use ribbons and embellishments to take pieces you already have and update them to look fresh off the runway.
____________________________________________________
Project 1: Button Elastics
I am always tying my hair back in the middle of the day to get it out of my face so I wear a hair elastic on my wrist at all times. This easy DIY brightens up boring hair elastics for a tie that looks just as cute on your wrist as it will in your ponytail!
M&J Items Used:
Enamel Fashion Button Item# 45870011 (Call 1.800.9.MJTRIM)
Project 2: Sweet Rocker Tee:
I absolutely love a great vintage tee. Adding some frills and beaded embellishments can give them a feminine touch – making the perfect top to pair with some leggings and booties for a sweet hard rock look.
M&J Items Used:
3″ Rigid Lace Item# 37077
7/8″ Sequin/Organdy Border Item# 47225 (Call 1.800.9.MJTRIM)
Beaded Applique Item# 39350 (Call 1.800.9.MJTRIM)
Project 3: Prada-Inspired Striped Midi Skirt
Prada’s S/S 11 lollipop colored stripes on sophisticated black items inspired the midi skirt I created. I don’t have a sewing machine, so everything you see here was sewn by hand. It doesn’t take much time, and if you make sure you get a perfectly-matching color of thread, it doesn’t take much talent either!
M&J Items Used:
50Mm Midori Dupioni Silk Item# 37302 in Burnt Sienna and Dahlia
Needle and Thread in colors Item# 42681 Magenta and Poppy
Project 1: Multi-Finger ring
Multi-finger rings have been spotted everywhere lately. As one of this season’s hottest trends, you can make your very own multi-finger ring with just a few supplies.
Supplies:
3 Fashion Dome Buttons Item# 46459 in Teal
– Button shank remover
– Scissors
– Scrap of pleather or leather (1.5″x2.5″)
– Super glue
– 3 ring blanks
1) Fold the scrap pleather/leather in half, lengthwise.
2) Glue along the inside.
3) Remove the shanks from the back of the buttons.
4) Glue the buttons onto the rectangle.
5) Glue the ring blanks on the back of the rectangle.
6) Let dry.
 _____
Project 2: Chain and Cord Bracelet
This statement bracelet looks complicated, but it really isn’t! I love the combination of different textures, between the chain and the cord.
Supplies:
Cord/Braid Item# 887060198 in Ovocado (1.800.9.MJTRIM) , about 60 inches
– Kelly Green Color thread Item#42681
1 Fashion Dome Buttons Item# 46459 in Teal
– Thick wide curb chain
– Sewing needle
– Scissors
– Jewelry pliers
– Jewelry clasp and jump rings
– Clear nailpolish
Tip: Wrap tape around the ends of the cord to prevent them from fraying while you make the bracelet.
1) Cut the cord into two 30 inch pieces, and thread one piece through the first link of the curb chain. Fold the thread in half to make sure that there’s the same amount of thread on either side. Take the bottom strand, fold it over the top strand and then through the second link.
2) Take this strand and fold it back over the chain, and under the other strand. That other strand then goes through the chain.
3) Repeat steps 1-2 until you reach the end
4) Thread the other piece of cord through the first link of the chain, and repeat until you’ve braided the other side.
5) Sew the ends together, and sew on the button to accent the bracelet.
6) Sew the clasp onto the cord, trim the ends and secure with clear nail polish to prevent fraying.
_____
Project 3: Ribbon Wrap Bracelet
This Ribbon Wrap Bracelet is the ultimate spring accessory; it totally reminds me of flowers, sunshine and nature. You can also use the same method with different types of ribbons to create a completely different vibe.
Supplies:
Hand Dyed Silk Satin Ribbon Item# 33583 about 120 inches for a 7 inch bracelet
Rhinestone trim (*this is actually from M&J Trimming as well, but I had this beforehand.)
– Scissors
– Hot glue gun
1) Fold the ribbon in half about 4 times. You might need to fold more or less times depending on the size of your wrist.
2) Tie the ends together in a bow.
3) Wrap a 1.5 inch piece of rhinestone trim around the bow, and secure with hot glue.
____
Project 4: Shoulder Trim Shirt
You can give some life to a plain old shirt by using gold trim to accent the shoulders. I love the way the trim hangs off the sleeves – it adds a sultry, flirty element. Regardless of what color shirt you choose, the gold trim will look amazing with any color.
Supplies:
– Gold Chain Item# 44522  (1.800.9.MJTRIM)
– Peacock Color thread Item#42681
 – Sewing needle
– T-shirt of your choice
– Scissors
1) Find the seam on the shoulder of your shirt. Line the trim along the seam and sew the edge of the trim to the edge of the shirt.
2) Sew the trim in the middle, with just a one or two simple stitches.
3) Sew in a few more spots along the trim.
_____
Project 5: Gold Trim Headband
This headband is my personal favorite; it can add some gypsy-inspired flair to any outfit, and will look great whether you have short or long hair.
Supplies:
Gold Chain Item# 44522  (1.800.9.MJTRIM), about 13-15 inches
– Elastic, 7-8 inches
– Super glue1) First and only step – glue both ends of the trim to the elastic. Instant headband.
_____
Project 6: Thread Tassel Keychain
Tassels are one of the hottest trends right now. You can easily make your own tassel with some thread, a pair of scissors and a small book. The best part?  You can even use different colored threads to create fun, multi-colored tassels.
Supplies:
Metal Tooth Pendant Item# 42406
Peacock Color thread Item#42681
– Small book
– Key ring
– Scissors
1) Create your own skein of thread by wrapping the thread around the book, about 40-50 times.
2) Slowly slip off the thread and tie the top section off, with a spare piece of thread. This will form a loop.
3) Attach the tassel and horn pendant to a key ring.
Sketch42 Blogger of the Month – April
Hey Everyone!  Nicole from Sketch42 here! I am delighted to be this month’s blogger of the month, and even more delighted when I opened the gorgeous little package that the folks at M&J sent over!
This spring I am SO inspired by neons and color so when I opened the box and found neon grosgrain ribbon and Rit Dye, I was thrilled! I have been dying to do some dip-dying ever since I made some tie-dye napkins this summer. Dip Dying seems just a tad more sophisticated and is a much simpler affair.
So for my first project, I made a place setting that I would use for a spring lunch or brunch. The great thing about this project is that even just by using the neon grosgrain bow as a napkin ring, you can set a totally current and chic table with very little permanence or cost.
After I made the dyed napkins and the co-ordinating napkin ring and placed them on a white plate, I knew I wanted to add way more color. So I added a peacock colored placemat that I already had. Then I realized I had these amazing vintage neon glasses and that they would add even more color to the table. And then after that, I thought of making the orange coaster! (I was considering making a placemat but I didnt have enough cord…)
For my second project, I spruced up one of my daughters shirts, by adding a strip of neon grosgrain underneath the buttons. I love this idea because its so subtle and yet it really makes the shirt seem super fresh. I also adorned the collar with a beaded flower to add that little extra something. I totally want to make one of these for myself using the neon yellow ribbon… but thats a project for another day. For a man’s shirt, I would add the ribbon on the underside of the collar. Just a little peak of color is the key to keeping this DIY sophisticated.
Materials Sent
4mm Imported Rayon Twist Cord Item# 42950 in Orange
1” Imported Chromspun Grosgrain Item# 02224 in Neon Orange
1” Imported Chromspun GrosgrainItem# 02224 in Neon Yellow
1” Imported Chromspun Grosgrain Item# 02224 in Neon Pink
2mm Round Learther Cord Item# 00260 in Turquoise
Thread Item# 42681 in Golden Rod and Poppy
Rit Dye Powder Item# 46301 in Fuchsia and Sunshine Orange
Seed Beads Item# 76010 in Paque
Project 1
Project 1 Instructions: Dip Dyed Napkins
  • Follow the instructions on the Rit Dye Box. I chose to do mine on the stove. Mix dye with hot water, salt and a small amount of detergent. Stir and wait until desired color is achieved.
  • Take clean, washed napkins and dip into the dye bath. I dipped the edges of one napkin, the side of another and the bottom of another. Ultimately, the napkin with the dyed bottom was the most successful.
  • Immediately rinse with warm water, then cold until the water runs clear.
  • Dry and iron.
Project 2
Project 2 Instructions: Neon Grosgrain Bow.
  • Begin the  bow by winding the ribbon back and forth to form three loops. To do this, first form one loop. Holding the loop at its midpoint, wind the ribbon underneath to form another loop that is slightly larger than the first. Now hold both of the loops together at their midpoints and wind the ribbon underneath in the opposite direction to form a final loop, again slightly larger than the previous.
  • Staple them together at the midpoint.
  • Wrap a small piece of ribbon over the staple and secure in the back with a glue gun.
  • Attach to the center of the extra ribbon , and using the glue gun secure the ends of the ribbon to each other.
  • Place the napkin inside.
Project3
Project 3 Instructions: Orange Cord Coaster
  • Remove the tape from the edge of your cord.
  • Using a glue gun, apply a little bit of glue to the edge of your cord to stop fraying .
  • Place the cord flat on a table and wrap the cord into a spiral, using one hand to keep it flat and the other to twist.
  • Take your glue gun and cover the entire cord with glue. Make sure that the glue gets in between the cord. Finish the edge of the cord with a little more glue and tuck it into the side of the coaster.
  • After the glue dries, turn it over and voila!
Finished Look
Project 4
Project 4:  Neon edged white button down:
  • Take a plain white button down shirt.  Find a ribbon that matches the width of the area you want to cover.
  • Remove all the buttons.
  • Using a no-sew iron on stitching, fold over the edge of the ribbon and iron it so that fraying is not exposed.
  • Measure the length of the ribbon to your shirt adding a 1/8 of an inch (for folding over) and cut the ribbon. Then finish that edge with the iron on stitching as well.
  • Iron on the entire ribbon to the length of the shirt. (I made sure that the side edge of  my ribbon would jut out just past where the shirt would cover so that the ribbon would show the entire length of the shirt even when it was buttoned.)
  • Sew on all the buttons using colored thread. (Even just simply changing the thread would have subtly spruced up this shirt!) I also stitched the top and bottom edges of the ribbon to the shirt.
  • Stitch a few beads in a flower pattern at the collar.
  • I paired it with jeans and a bracelet I made by braiding the enclosed leather cord.
