People know M&J because of our amazingly colorful storefront filled with trims of all shapes and sizes. More and more people know about our subscription DIY box, Project DIY. But there is one area of M&J Trimming that most people aren’t privy to. This section of M&J is a magical place filled with unicorns, pandas, jewelry and accessories, and it’s called Papillon Accessories.
Papillon Accessories is a division of M&J that creates licensed and private label products. What does that mean? Papillon Accessories buys a license to create hats, jewelry, cold weather accessories, and Halloween accessories, featuring some of your favorite characters and brands like Lisa Frank, Hello Kitty, Angry Panda, and Sharknado! Papillon then sells these items to retailers who offer them to customers in their retail locations.
Papillon Accessories is always busy creating lots of amazing goodies just for Halloween, and we wanted to see what kind of items they were working on. We took a little trip to the Papillon Accessories studio to give our readers a behind-the-scenes look at what goes on in this little-known, but very important, part of M&J Trimming.
Just in time for Halloween, Papillon Accessories has created some costumes inspired by one of the most popular (and strangest) sci-fi movies of the last year. That’s right ladies and gents. We’re talking about Sharknado. You can buy our very own Sharknado Shark Fin Costume Headband and the Sharknado Shark Mask Hood today on Amazon, and get it just in time for Halloween.
Right now Papillon Accessories is inspired by the sea, and their designers are creating a ton of adorable “sea punk” pieces! These necklaces will be sold to stores like Claire’s or Hot Topic, where YOU can buy them!
We love these pendant necklaces. The keys and cogs make them look a little bit steam punk! It’s very Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea if you ask us.
These pieces are a little more sparkly and refined, like the jewels you would find in a sunken pirate treasure chest! And the teal starfish ring is such a showstopper!
We love this charm necklace, and what’s that one charm on the middle right? A dinglehopper, right?

Aside from our long history as a New York City specialty store and our massive selection of trims, there is something that we at M&J Trimming are proud to be known for: exceptional customer service. In honor of our amazing employees, we would like to introduce a new series of blog posts called Trimmer Tales, which highlights the people who make this company so special. Our first Trimmer Tale will feature Carlos, whose story proves that if you work hard, you will get where you need to be.
Carlos started out in maintenance, and was occasionally asked to help out on the floor when the flood of lunchtime customers came in. Noticing his creativity and ease with the guests, the Cohen brothers decided to use his knack for DIY at the monthly crafting seminars. Carlos soon became a hit! Now he’s a seasoned member of the floor who is a celeb-favorite, helping stars like Miss Tina Knowles, Paris Hilton, and Sarah Jessica Parker. He’s even made a head piece for Cher to wear!
He notes that his favorite thing about M&J Trimming is working with the Cohen family. He attributes his success to the tremendous opportunity that they had given him. He also learned a lot about selling by watching Mr. J in action. The fact that the store has such an amazing selection of unique and hard-to-find items makes it easy to sell. “It’s like a candy store,” Carlos says, “We have so much variety!”
Carlos’s favorite way to DIY? Embellishing. He loves taking plain items and making them into his own. And his number one tip for those who want to get into the DIY game? He says you should make something using not commonly found materials. The more unique your materials, the more it reflects YOUR personal style.
