DIY: Men’s Winter Vest Upgrade

With winter well on its way we thought it would be appropriate to DIY a winter accessory, and even more fun to DIY a male accessory. We asked one of our male coworkers to help us out with this project, and decided to DIY his go-to winter vest. The end result is pretty awesome, and made for an easy and fun DIY.

Materials needed:

Step 1: attach nail head trim (6-Row Plastic Square Trim style# 44401 – black) to lower vest.

First, apply the multi-grip glue to the first 2 or 3 inches of the trim. When the glue is evenly added to the trim, place the trim on the lower part of the vest and wait two minutes. Then begin to the sew the trim onto vest.

*Notes* We decided that we would glue and sew the trim onto the vest for a strong hold, but you can glue or sew only if you feel confident that will hold. We will also be adding the trim onto the vest in stages so it will look even.

If you are going to glue and sew,  you should space out the distance between where you put glue on your trim, space out your glue so that you only have 2 or 3 small portions glued for support and then sew over the rest (this particular trim has a nice spacing in between the rows of nail head, it’s a very good trim for even a beginner to start sewing on).

Step 2: Nailhead front pocket flap –

For this step we decided to embellish the flap of the front pocket but you can embellish any part of the vest or coat.

Take your 7MM x 25MM curved spikes with screws, and something sharp to use for assistance, we used a screw driver. Ideally, you would want to use M&Js revolving hole puncher, (style # 55246) but anything sharp is fine.

First,  punch a hole through the flap. After the hole is made, make sure u keep your finger on the whole to keep its place, if you’re using a thicker fabric for a vest the hole can literally just drop out of sight on you.  Then you take the screw to the back of the nailhead, push it through the back of the whole and then screw it into its spike from the front. We also used a flathead screw driver to further tighten the screw and spike together.

And that’s all it takes to completely transform an ordinary vest into your own creation.
